About

THE WHY

The Stanley Keg Challenge is a unique tournament for us late night beer league hockey warriors.

We were not good enough to play for the real Stanley Cup, but it does not mean we can’t make our own fun.

We too want to play hockey in a competitive, fun environment for a cup of our own.

A BIT OF HISTORY

The Stanley Cup started out as a challenge cup for the first 22 years before the NHL made it its official trophy. Teams from all over Canada and the US used to challenge for Lord Stanley’s cup, as it was known then.

Before 1912, challenges could take place at any time, given the appropriate rink conditions, and it was common for teams to defend the Cup numerous times during the year. In 1912, the Cup’s trustees declared that the Cup was only to be defended at the end of the champion team’s regular season.

At first it was just one game, then it was two total score series and before long teams moved to best of 3 and best of 5 formats. And the rest as we say is history.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

The format of the tournament follows the 4 Nations Cup (that was a fun tourney to watch, wasn’t it?). There will be 4 teams in your division.

Your team will play Friday and Saturday in a Round Robin Round against the other 3 teams. At the end of the Round Robin Round, the top two teams by points will play on Sunday for The Stanley Keg.

The tournament offers multiple divisions for your team to choose from to challenge for the Stanley Keg at your level of play.

The top division will be open (bring the best team you can bring, no restrictions) and the bottom division will be reserved for beginner teams (we all deserve to have fun!). All other divisions will be set up for maximum parity.

We have a magic formula to make the tournament fun for everyone participating and make the games close.
